The Approach
Using techniques based in a foundation of vocal science, specific storytelling and vocal emotional color to craft a singular expression of vocal artistry.
I am honored to be a mentor and guide for my students, giving them my utmost attention and respect. When a student entrusts me with the responsibility of teaching them how to hone their skills, I make it my mission to help deepen their understanding of their OWN voice, building from what they have without stripping them of their unique sound or special gift.
Personal Artistry
My take on teaching the art of singing is that one’s voice is precious and unique and needs to be nurtured from the inside out. I believe that technique must be balanced by authentic emotional truth and the unique artistry of the singer. True excellence in vocal performance comes from crafting a singular expression of a piece of music, and we will work together to develop a well-rounded and compelling vocal presence that resonates deeply with both the singer and their audience.
Technical Skills
As a voice teacher, I specialize in the technical aspects of habilitation (building), rehabilitation, conditioning and maintenance of the voice. I also help singers work through vocal injuries, disorders, surgery or other vocal issues by actively participating in their treatment and retraining of the voice. Change comes when you can not only hear the difference but feel the difference.
Vocal exercises are tailored to each individual singer to strengthen the larynx, release tension, increase range and flexibility, and deepen breath support. Attention to performance skills and body language, audition technique, repertoire, and nerves are all addressed in the studio.
I look to give each student the tools to achieve a technical “muscle memory” so that they truly sing from the heart!
Physical & Emotional Alignment
I use a variety of disciplines in my studio including yoga and physical alignment (Feldenkrais). I also draw from Linklater and Meisner philosophies in order to deepen the dramatic connection to the story. From releasing tension in the body to the precise alignment of your vocal tract and management of breath pressure, we will dedicate time to true physical and emotional connection to each piece of music. This comprehensive approach ensures sustainable vocal practice and results in stunning, truthful performances.
Science Forward Approach
Vocology is the term that encapsulates what a voice teacher should be well versed in as the complete understanding of the human voice. Everything from the mechanism of the larynx and the intrinsic muscles that facilitate the function of the vocal cords to the diaphragm and sub-glottal air pressure and beyond. I am a Vocologist. I work with the entire human in front of me to get the most efficient vocal production possible.
